RESUMO Este estudo caracterizou os achados clínicos, radiológicos, ultrassonográficos e necroscópicos de um caso de malformação de Arnold-Chiari tipo II em uma bezerra Gir no Brasil. O animal foi hospilatizado aos 60 dias de idade, apresentando decúbito esternal permanente, apêndice cutâneo na altura da quarta vértebra lombar e cifoescoliose da coluna vertebral torácica caudal e lombossacra. Ao exame radiográfico da coluna e do crânio, foram observadas espinha bífida e suspeita de hipoplasia occipital. Ao exame de mielografia com injeção de contraste lombar e atlanto-occipital, foi possivel visualizar a meningocele na altura da quarta vértebra lombar e achados em nível rombencefálico de aumento da pressão regional com falha de preenchimento do contraste na fossa posterior, na presença de nítida demarcação das circunvoluções do córtex cerebral e do espaço subaracnoide da medula espinhal cervical. Ao exame ultrassonográfico do cerebelo, foi observada insinuação do verme cerebelar através do forame magno. O animal não apresentou alterações em hemograma completo, série bioquímica e fluido cérebro-espinhal e foi negativo para Pestivirus. Houve uma piora do quadro clínico e o animal morreu. Essa malformação de etiologia desconhecida deve ser estudada como um diagnóstico diferencial.

ABSTRACT This study characterized the clinical, radiological, ultrasound, and necroscopic findings of a case of Arnold-Chiari type II malformation in a Gir breed calf from Brazil. The animal was hospitalized at sixty days of age, in permanent sternal recumbency, cutaneous appendix at the 4th lumbar vertebra and kyphoscoliosis of the caudal and lumbosacral thoracic spine. Radiographic examination of the spine and skull revealed spina bifida and suspected occipital hypoplasia. Upon examination of myelography with an injection of lumbar and atlantooccipital contrast, it was possible to visualize the meningocele at the 4th lumbar vertebra region and findings at the rhombencephalon level of increased regional pressure with failure to fill the contrast in the posterior fossa, in the presence of clear demarcation of the circumvolutions of the cerebral cortex and the subarachnoid space of the cervical spinal cord. Ultrasonographic examination of the cerebellum showed an insinuation of the cerebellar worm through the foramen magnum. The animal did not show changes in complete blood count, biochemical series, and cerebrospinal fluid and was negative for Pestivirus. There was a worsening of the clinical conditions and the animal died. This malformation of unknown etiology must be studied as a differential diagnosis of the nervous system disorders.

No presente trabalho, descreve-se a composição em betacianidinas (classe das betalaínas com pigmentação vermelha-roxo) da perpétua roxa (Gomphrena globosa L.), de forma a destacar esta planta como fonte alternativa de corantes naturais. A análise foi feita por cromatografia líquida de alta eficiência acoplada a um detetor de fotodíodos e espetrometria de massa com ionização por dispersão de eletrões (HPLC-PDA-MS/ESI), após extração com diferentes solventes (infusão com água e maceração com água: metanol, 80:20, v/v).

In this paper, it is described the betacyanins composition (class of betalain with red-purple pigmentation) of globe amaranth (Gomphrena globosa L.) in order to highlight this plant as an alternative source of natural dyes. The analysis was performed by high-performance liquid chromatography coupled with a photodiode array detector and mass spectrometry with electron spray ionization (HPLC-PDA-MS/ESI) after extraction with different solvents (infusion with water and maceration with water: methanol, 80:20, v/v).

O hemangiossarcoma ocular na espécie equina é um tumor maligno, raro e agressivo, de origem vascular endotelial. No presente trabalho, descreve-se um caso de hemangiossarcoma ocular em uma égua de 10 anos que apresentava secreção serossanguinolenta advinda de uma massa, acometendo a conjuntiva bulbar e a terceira pálpebra do olho direito. O diagnóstico foi realizado com base na avaliação histopatológica e na imuno-histoquímica. Foi realizada a enucleação, assim como a completa excisão cirúrgica do tecido acometido, não sendo observada, após seis meses da terapia, a recidiva ou a metástase da lesão.

Equine ocular hemangiosarcoma is a rare and aggressive malignant tumor of vascular endothelial origin. We describe a case of ocular hemangiosarcoma in a 10-year-old mare with serosanguineous secretion arising from a mass involving the bulbar conjunctiva and third eyelid of the right eye. The diagnosis was based on histopathological evaluation and immunohistochemistry. Enucleation was performed as complete surgical excision of the affected tissue, with no recurrence or metastasis of the lesion being observed after six months of.

A terapia celular vem sendo utilizada com resultados promissores no tratamento da tendinite equina, entretanto ainda existem dúvidas quanto à persistência e ao comportamento dessas células quando implantadas no local da lesão, e quanto à sua migração para outros focos inflamatórios. O objetivo deste estudo foi avaliar a marcação das células-tronco mesenquimais (CTMs) com nanocristal antes e após o implante em lesões tendíneas experimentais do tendão flexor digital superficial (TFDS) de equinos, bem como observar a possibilidade de migração das CTMs marcadas para outro foco de lesão, o membro contralateral do mesmo animal. Para isso, foi realizada a indução de lesão experimental no TFDS em ambos os membros torácicos de cinco equinos e, após sete dias, foram implantadas as CTMs autólogas marcadas com o nanocristal Qtracker 655 em um dos membros dos animais. Após sete dias do implante, foi realizada a biópsia tendínea para posterior avaliação histopatológica, utilizando-se microscopia com fluorescência. Também foi realizado o teste de viabilidade celular antes e após a incubação com o nanocristal. As CTMs marcadas e injetadas no tecido tendíneo mantiveram sua fluorescência sete dias após seu implante, e não ocorreu migração para o membro contralateral. O uso do nanocristal para a marcação das CTMs derivadas da medula óssea equina mostrou-se efetivo pelo fato de essa nanopartícula não ter alterado a viabilidade celular e por ela ter permanecido ativa durante o período implantado.

Cell therapy has been used with promising results in the treatment of equine tendinitis. However, there are still doubts about the persistence and behavior of these cells implanted in the injured tissue and their migration to other inflamed sites. The aim of this study was to evaluate the labeling of mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs) with nanocrystals before and after implantation in experimental tendinitis of the superficial digital flexor tendon (SDFT) of horses, observing the migration possibility of MSCs marked to another lesion, performed on the contralateral limb of the same animal. An experimental lesion was induced in SDFT in both forelimbs of five horses, and after seven days autologous MSCs labeled with Qtracker(r) 655 were implanted in one member of the animals. Tendon biopsy was performed for subsequent histopathological evaluation using fluorescence microscopy seven days after the implant. Cell viability test was also performed before and after incubation with the cell labeling kit. MSCs labeled and injected into the tendon tissue maintained their fluorescence seven days after their implantation and there was no migration to the contralateral limb. The use of nanocrystals for labeling MSCs was effective because it does not alter cell viability and remains active during the experimental period.

O uso de células tronco tem demonstrado resultados promissores na terapia da tendinite e osteoartrite na medicina equina. O objetivo deste trabalho foi caracterizar as células tronco mesenquimais derivadas do tecido adiposo (AdCTMs) em cavalos através da (1) avaliação da capacidade das células progenitoras para realizar a diferenciação adipogênica, osteogênica e condrogênica; e (2) através da análise por citometria de fluxo, utilizando os marcadores stemness relacionados: CD44, CD90, CD105 e MHC de Classe II. Cinco cavalos sem raça definida, de 2 a 4 anos de idade foram utilizados para a coleta do tecido adiposo da base da cauda. Após o isolamento e cultivo das AdCTMs, a caracterização imunofenotípica foi realizada pela citometria de fluxo. Houve alta expressão dos marcadores CD44, CD90 e CD105, e não houve expressão do MHC Classe II. A diferenciação foi confirmada pela coloração específica: adipogênica (Oil Red O), osteogênico (Alizarin Red), e condrogênico (Alcian Blue). As AdCTMs são um tipo promissor de células progenitoras adulta para a engenharia tecidual na medicina veterinária.

Stem cell therapy has shown promising results in tendinitis and osteoarthritis in equine medicine. The purpose of this work was to characterize the adipose-derived mesenchymal stem cells (AdMSCs) in horses through (1) the assessment of the capacity of progenitor cells to perform adipogenic, osteogenic and chondrogenic differentiation; and (2) flow cytometry analysis using the stemness related markers: CD44, CD90, CD105 and MHC Class II. Five mixed-breed horses, aged 2-4 years-old were used to collect adipose tissue from the base of the tail. After isolation and culture of AdMSCs, immunophenotypic characterization was performed through flow cytometry. There was a high expression of CD44, CD90 and CD105, and no expression of MHC Class II markers. The tri-lineage differentiation was confirmed by specific staining: adipogenic (Oil Red O), osteogenic (Alizarin Red), and chondrogenic (Alcian Blue). The equine AdMSCs are a promising type of adult progenitor cell for tissue engineering in veterinary medicine.

Estudou-se a eficácia do plasma rico em plaquetas (PRP) no tratamento de lesões condrais articulares, experimentalmente induzidas em equinos. Para isso, foi induzida uma lesão condral, na tróclea medial femoral dos dois membros pélvicos de quatro animais. Após 30 dias da indução, as oito articulações foram divididas em dois grupos. Os animais do grupo 1 receberam o tratamento intralesional e intra-articular com PRP, e os do grupo 2 foram tratados apenas com solução fisiológica. As avaliações clínicas, constituídas de exames de claudicação e análises do líquido sinovial, foram realizadas antes da indução da lesão - tempo zero -, quinzenalmente, até 120 dias e aos 150 dias. Avaliações macroscópicas, histológicas e histoquímicas foram realizadas no tempo zero e aos 150 dias. Os equinos do grupo 1 apresentaram melhora do grau de claudicação em relação aos do grupo 2. Os exames macroscópicos, histológicos e histoquímicos revelaram melhor tecido de reparação igualmente no grupo 1. Concluiu-se que a administração de PRP apresentou efeitos benéficos no tratamento de lesões condrais experimentais de equinos.

The use of platelet-rich plasma (PRP) in the treatment of articular cartilage defects induced experimentally in horses was studied. For this purpose, both patellofemoral joints of four animals were approached through arthroscopic surgery to perform a cartilage defect on the medial femoral trochlea. After 30 days of induction the eight joints were divided into two groups. Group 1 animals received intralesional and intra-articular treatment with PRP and Group 2 animals were treated only with saline solution. The clinical assessments, constituted by lameness signs and synovial fluid analysis, were performed before induction of injury (time zero) and every 15 days in 120 days, with last analysis on day 150. The macroscopic and morphologic analysis were performed at 0 and 150 days. During the experiment Group 1 animals showed improvement in lameness when compared to Group 2 animals. The macroscopic and morphological analysis showed a better tissue repair in the treated horses. Thus, the implantation of autologous PRP showed beneficial effects in the treatment of chondral lesions, experimentally induced in horses.

This paper describes the case of a horse treated in a Teaching Veterinary Hospital. The sutures of the flexor apparatus associated with cell therapy, the stem cell, provided a rapid response of repair compared to other cases treated in routine of the Hospital. The association of conventional treatments with the mononuclear fraction of bone marrow significantly contributed to the reduction of the hyperextension of the metatarsophalangeal joint. Ultrasound images showed rapid fill cell and decrease in inflammation.

Foram induzidas lesões no tendão flexor digital superficial (TFDS) de ambos os membros anteriores de seis equinos, seguidas de implante autólogo de células da fração mononuclear de medula óssea em apenas um membro de cada animal. Os animais foram avaliados por parâmetros clínicos, ultrassonográficos, histopatológico e imunoistoquímico. Paralelamente, realizou-se o cultivo de novas amostras para a caracterização das células utilizando-se marcadores CD34 e CD45 por meio da citometria de fluxo, confirmando a presença de células mesenquimais na fração mononuclear. A caracterização das fibras colágenas tipo I e tipo III no tecido neoformado mostrou melhora na qualidade da cicatrização tendínea dos membros tratados. A terapia com implante autólogo das células da fração mononuclear melhorou a organização tecidual e a sua qualidade, apresentando maior expressão significativa para colágeno tipo I.

The present study was developed inducing a lesion in the SDFT of both thoracic limbs of six horses followed by autologous implantation of mononuclear cells from bone marrow in only one affected limb of each horse. The horses were evaluated through clinical and ultrasonography exams, and through histopathology and immunohistochemistry patterns. Concomitantly, new samples were cultivated and characterized using CD34 and CD45 markers, proving the presence of mesenchymal cells in the mononuclear fraction. The characterization of collagen fibers type I and type III in the new tissue has showed an improvement in tendon healing in treated limbs. The therapy with autologous implant of the mononuclear fraction has improved tissue organization and its quality, having a significanlyt higher expression of collagen type I.

The present study estimated the prevalence of metabolic syndrome (MS) according to the criteria established by the National Cholesterol Education Program-Adult Treatment Panel III (NCEP-ATPIII) and the International Diabetes Federation (IDF) and analyzed the contribution of social factors in an adult urban population in the Southeastern region of Brazil. The sample plan was based on multistage probability sampling according to family head income and educational level. A random sample of 1116 subjects aged 30 to 79 years was studied. Participants answered a questionnaire about socio-demographic variables and medical history. Fasting capillary glucose (FCG), total cholesterol, high-density lipoprotein cholesterol (HDL-C), and triglycerides were determined and all non-diabetic subjects were submitted to the 75-g oral glucose tolerance test. Body mass index (BMI, kg/m²), waist circumference and blood pressure (BP) were determined. Age- and gender-adjusted prevalence of MS was 35.9 and 43.2% according to NCEP-ATPIII and IDF criteria, respectively. Substantial agreement was found between NCEP-ATPIII and IDF definitions. Low HDL-C levels and high BP were the most prevalent MS components according to NCEP-ATPIII criteria (76.3 and 59.2%, respectively). Considering the diagnostic criteria adopted, 13.5% of the subjects had diabetes and 9.7% had FCG ≥100 mg/dL. MS prevalence was significantly associated with age, skin color, BMI, and educational level. This cross-sectional population-based study in the Southeastern region of Brazil indicates that MS is highly prevalent and associated with an important social indicator, i.e., educational level. This result suggests that in developing countries health policy planning to reduce the risk of MS, in particular, should consider improvement in education.

A adubação verde é uma prática conservacionista pouco utilizada nos Cerrados do Brasil Central. Visando obter informações sobre as características fenológicas das espécies de leguminosas utilizadas como adubos verdes, em diferentes épocas de semeadura na Região dos Cerrados, instalaram-se três experimentos, durante o ano agrícola de 1991/92, na área experimental do Centro Nacional de Pesquisa de Solos/Coordenadoria Regional Centro-Oeste - EMBRAPA, localizada na Estação Experimental da Empresa Goiana de Pesquisa Agropecuária - EMGOPA, em Senador Canedo, GO. As espécies testadas foram a Crotalaria juncea L., mucuna preta (Mucuna aterrima (Piper & Tracy) Merr.), guandu (Cajanus cajan (L.) Millsp.) e feijão-bravo do Ceará (Canavalia brasiliensis), em três épocas de semeadura. O delineamento experimental utilizado, dentro de cada época, foi de blocos ao acaso, apresentando três repetições. A C. juncea e o C. cajan apresentaram as maiores produções de fitomassa seca. O atraso da semeadura, em relação ao início da estação chuvosa, acelerou o florescimento das leguminosas e reduziu os rendimentos de fitomassa seca produzidos pela C. juncea e pelo C. cajan.

The use of green manure is not a common conservation practice in "cerrado" regions. In order to investigate the phenological characteristics and mineral composition of leguminous plants used as green manure at different sowing times, three experiments were conducted during the 1991/92 growing seasons at the Soils National Research Center/West Center Coordination - EMBRAPA, in EMGOPA's Experimental Station, Senador Canedo, GO. Four species, Crotalaria juncea L., Mucuna aterrima (Piper & Tracy) Merr., Cajanus cajan (L.) Millsp. and Canavalia brasiliensis, were tested for three sowing dates. A randomized block design was used, with three replications. The results obtained allow the following conclusions: 1) In all sowing dates Crotalaria juncea e o Cajanus cajan showed the highest dry matter yield; 2) The sowing delay in relation to the begining of the rainy season accelerates flowering of the leguminous plants and decreased the dry matter yield of C. juncea and C. cajan.
